Snowboarding & Innovation: Parallel Journeys

Lessons learnt from Snowboarding that can apply to Innovation

FAMILYPERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Hi everyone, I recently returned from a family holiday in Japan, where I tried snowboarding for the first time. To be honest, it was pretty tough early on—lots of falls, plenty of frustration, and a steep learning curve. But after pushing through that initial struggle, everything suddenly clicked. Before I knew it, snowboarding became easier, far more enjoyable, and my progress accelerated.

I believe the same applies to stepping into a new role or taking on a fresh challenge at work—often it’s messy at the start, but once you get your bearings, you can carve your own path to success.

Here are a few lessons I learnt on the slopes that translate nicely to any new workplace challenge or innovation project:
- Embrace the Falls: Mistakes are inevitable. They can feel discouraging, but every stumble (on the snow or in business) is just another lesson in what doesn’t work. (

- Set Small Targets: Learn the basics first, then build on them. When you master the fundamentals of a new role or project, you gain the confidence to take on bigger tasks.
- Seek Experts & Mentors: While I watched a few YouTube tutorials, working with a qualified instructor supercharged my learning. The same goes for mentorship in the workplace.
- Practice & Persevere: Progress can be slow, but as you keep going, it becomes second nature. Stay consistent, and soon you’ll find yourself racing ahead with ease.
- Celebrate Wins (Big & Small): A clean run down the slope feels amazing—so does hitting a milestone at work. Savour the moment and use that boost to keep going.

Whether you’re on the slopes of Japan or in the boardroom, approaching challenges with curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to adapt is the surest way to accelerate your performance.

Keep pushing, and eventually, you’ll find your flow. Safe rides—and happy innovating!
